Low ‘n’ slow barbecuing is a hobby of mine, and to go along with that I also enjoy craft beer. I have a little keg and BBQ set up at home and we really enjoy entertaining with family and friends.
In my dream hobby life, I would love to own a Lamborghini Courtage – the boxy, very early supercar. What I actually have is a V8 Commodore, one of my wife’s hobbies is telling me to sell the Commodore, but unfortunately for her now I have a son I will never sell it because it will be his one day. We’ve just had a little girl, so the next challenge will be finding an old car that suits her.
What is the best career advice you’ve been given?
A small firm is better to work for than a big firm. Very true.
What advice would you offer others?
Back yourself. If you think an opportunity is there to take, take it, especially while you’re young. A ship is safe in harbour, but that’s not what they’re built for.
What emerging technology are you excited about?
I like to tinker about the house so building and construction technology is something that really interests me. If you think about something as simple as building a deck – which I’ve done about ten times – that was difficult 50 years ago with no power tools. Even something as simple as a cordless drill – every home handyman has one, but just a decade ago things like that were out of many people’s budgets. We can do so much more and more easily now. Just remember to tell council what you’re doing, or you can get in trouble – I may have run afoul of that a time or two.
Where do you live and what do you like about it?
I live in north west Sydney and I like that it’s far enough away from the CBD that I can relax, but close enough so that I can get there relatively quickly. And for reasonable sum of money you can get bang for your buck in property terms. It’s also a great area for bringing up kids. I was probably destined to live here because I took 25 years to move out of mum and dad’s and when I finally did, I bought a house up the street… and my brother lives in between. It’s our little patch of the world and we love it.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I think I’d live where I am. If I won lotto tomorrow, I wouldn’t move house. I might put another story on though. And I would buy that Lamborghini and a whole lot of power tools!
What was the best holiday you’ve ever taken?
Our current holiday place is in Rylstone. It’s off grid, no town power, no town water, no gas. And it’s extremely relaxing. You can take your dog, take your kids, go on bushwalks, cook woodfired pizzas and spit roast BBQs. It has all the mod cons you need but you cannot see another person in any direction. We always look forward to going back.
If you could wake up one day magically able to play any sport perfectly which would you choose and why?
Golf or darts. They’re sports where you can play well into your senior years and still make a good deal of money. And you can enjoy a cold beverage while you do it and no one looks at you twice. You also don’t have to look after your body a great deal to participate, which makes it nice and relaxing.
